Mental Health First Aid Certification

Did you know that…

  • Nearly 1 in 5 adults in the United States live with a mental illness (44.7 million in 2016). (SOURCE: National Institute of Mental Health via the National Survey on Drug Use and Health and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration)

  • The median time (in years) between when someone starts developing symptoms and when they go for help is 10 years!

  • 44,965 Americans die by suicide every year and for every suicide, 25 people attempt suicide. (SOURCE: American Foundation for Suicide Prevention)

This 8 - hour certification course is a public education program that teaches individuals, especially people without a mental health background, about:  

  1. the warning signs of a person developing a mental health problem

  2. how to provide support when a person is in a crisis 

Participants will learn:

  • How to offer initial support until professional help arrives using role-playing and simulations exercises

  • How to identify the warning signs of specific illnesses such as anxiety, depression, substance use, bipolar disorder, eating disorders and schizophrenia

  • How to guide individuals to the appropriate mental health resources, professional, peer, social and self-help care.

This MHFA course teaches participants a 5-Step Action Plan to support someone developing signs and symptoms of a mental illness or is in an emotional crisis.

  • Assess for risk of suicide or harm

  • Listen non-judgmentally

  • Give reassurance and information

  • Encourage appropriate professional help

  • Encourage self-help and other support strategies.

About the Certificate

This certificate expires 3 years from the date you complete the course. Renewing is simple and can be done through the Mental Health First Aid website.
